christmas spirit

With Thanksgiving behind us, our favourite holiday movies back on our screens, beautiful twinkly lights and Christmas trees everywhere you turn, it’s safe to say the Christmas spirit is here and Christmas is in the air!
Whoop whoop! We are super excited and hopeful as you are for all the beautiful things this season has to offer.

However, as we get caught up in the excitement and buzz of Christmas, we would like to remember that Christmas is not so rosy for everyone due to health issues, financial crises, homelessness, grief and many other unfortunate situations.

So now more than ever is the time to think of ways to extend a hand of love to the people around us, especially those who seem in more need of it. This person could be a neighbour, friend, colleague or even a stranger.
After all, Christmas is not just about sharing gifts and delicious turkey, but also about sharing love, kindness and the warmth of the season.

At Firacard, our primary purpose is to share genuine joy and love across the world; and that is why we are sharing 10 easy ways for you to give back and show some love this Christmas.

Volunteer at a local charity

Being a volunteer can provide crucial support for charitable organizations and vulnerable groups during Christmas. Not only will you be spreading the Christmas spirit, but you will also be helping others have a less-stressful and memorable Christmas. No matter what your skills and capabilities are, there is a local charity that requires your help. It may be a food bank, animal shelter, an old peoples’ home or even a local hospice.

Help your neighbour with their Christmas decorations

While you could decide to focus solely on yourself this Christmas, you may find it even more rewarding to spread the Christmas spirit and merriment to those around you, and this includes your neighbours. So, instead of watching from your window and sipping coffee while your neighbour struggles on their roof to untangle a mess of light, simply walk over and offer to help. I am sure they will appreciate your kind gesture.

Give to the Homeless

As this may be the most beautiful time of the year for you, it sadly isn’t the greatest time of the year for those on the streets especially considering that the temperature is probably now below zero degrees in many countries. Show some love and spread Christmas cheer by giving the homeless blankets and food to keep them warm and make their Christmas a little brighter.

Visit your local firehouse or police station with some goodies

You get to relax and enjoy Christmas with your family because you got a week off from work, but these guys do not get any holidays off. And so, the kindest thing you can do is walk over to the station with some baked pie or something yummy and drop it off. This is another way to say “hey, thank you for working our streets all year round”.

Share hot chocolate on a cold day

Do you know anyone who needs to feel the warmth of the season? I mean folks working outside and the homeless. Then you can make some hot chocolate in disposable coffee cups with lids and deliver it to them in the spirit of Christmas.

Organize a Secret Santa exchange at your office

Secret Santa is absolutely a fabulous idea that represents the Christmas spirit of just giving. In addition to boosting morale at the workplace, Secret Santa also provides a sense of togetherness while maximizing the fun of gift-giving. So what are you waiting for? Go ahead and talk to your bosses and colleagues.
Set a spending limit that is not too high. Your best option is to fix the gift exchange date on the last day of work just before the holiday break. You can set up a secret Firacard for anyone who is leaving your workplace during this Christmas season, and add every other person as a contributor to your firacard. We have some fabulous Christmas themed backgrounds for you to try! This is about to be fun!

Donate

It’s alright if you cannot find the time to volunteer. However, you can donate to charities of your choice. As you do your Christmas grocery shopping, get a little extra something for your local food bank. By doing so, you will be helping a local family have a beautiful Christmas despite their financial restraints. The Salvation Army, for instance, accepts Christmas gifts for children and adults that they can distribute to people in need. So you can look for non-governmental organizations that are into that and make your donations there.

Get crafty with your Presents

Whether you’re the crafty type or not, you can tell how special receiving a DIY gift can be on Christmas day. Finding the time to create something with your hands for your kids, friends and family is a gift on its own. So, as every other person pushes their way through the big crowds in the mall looking to shop for gift items, you can get crafty with yours.
A knotted necklace for your mom, a set of homemade bath salts for your neighbour, knitted stockings for your kids, edible gifts, a photo calendar or a pom-pom scarf for your best friend. You will be excited to show them what you have made and they are sure to cherish it for years to come.

Invite a lonely friend or neighbour for dinner on Christmas day

Research has shown in recent years that there is a grip of a loneliness epidemic in the UK. This feeling of isolation and loneliness can become more pronounced and unbearable during the festive period. So sending an invite and sparing a chair at the dinner table on Christmas day for anyone who might be alone will go a long way. The more the merrier anyway!

Send a Firacard

Christmas has always been a season for giving and receiving paper cards, but this year, create a card that will neither end up in the pile of books or the bin. Send a Firacard.
Sending Christmas firacards is a great way to reach out to your loved ones and wish them a merry Christmas. These are people who have been there for you during the year and deserve extra cheer. Firacards helps you to send personalized messages to your loved ones. It is even more fun when you invite other mutual friends or family members as contributors to your card. Take it a notch higher by adding fun Christmas Gifs, videos, pictures and colourful backgrounds.

There are so many ways you can give love this Christmas. I hope you find this list helpful and it spurs within you the need to give and show love this season. I look forward to reading from you on how you made your holiday about helping and giving to others.
