Post-Grad Survival Guide: Networking with College Friends

Mar 1, 2023 | 4 Min Read

Graduating from college is a huge accomplishment, but it’s also a major life transition. For many graduates, this is the first time they’re entering the ‘real world’ and taking on adult responsibilities. In this post-grad survival guide, I’ll be sharing some dos and don’ts of post-grad life, including the importance of connecting with old classmates. It can be both exciting and intimidating, but by following these tips, you can make the most of your post-grad experience and create lasting connections with your college peers.

Dos:

  1. Do take time to reflect on your college experience. Graduating from college marks the end of a major chapter in your life, and it’s important to take some time to reflect on what you learned, the people you met, and the experiences you had. This can help you better understand yourself and your goals as you move forward.
  2. Do keep in touch with your college friends. Your college friends are the people who have shared some of the most formative experiences of your life, and they can provide a sense of continuity as you move into the next phase of your life. Make an effort to stay in touch with them, even if it’s just sending a quick text or email every once in a while.
  3. Do network and make new connections. Now that you’ve graduated, it’s time to start building your professional network. Attend networking events, connect with alumni, and reach out to people in your field of interest. You never know where a new connection might lead.
  4. Do take care of yourself. Post-grad life can be stressful, and it’s important to prioritize self-care. This might mean making time for exercise, cooking healthy meals, or simply taking a break when you need it.
  5. Do embrace new experiences. Now that you’re no longer tied to a college schedule, you have more freedom to explore new opportunities. Say “yes” to invitations, try new things, and keep an open mind. You never know what might lead to your next great adventure.

Don’ts:

  1. Don’t compare yourself to others. It’s easy to fall into the trap of comparing yourself to your peers, especially when it comes to job offers, salaries, and other markers of success. But remember that everyone has their own path, and your journey will be unique to you.
  2. Don’t isolate yourself. Post-grad life can be lonely, especially if you’ve moved away from your college friends or family. Make an effort to stay connected with people, whether that’s through social media, phone calls, or in-person meetups.
  3. Don’t let rejection get you down. Whether you’re applying for jobs or trying to make new connections, rejection is a part of life. Don’t let it discourage you or make you feel like you’re not good enough. Instead, use it as motivation to keep trying.
  4. Don’t ignore your finances. Post-grad life often means dealing with new financial responsibilities, such as student loans, rent, and bills. Make a budget, track your expenses, and start building good financial habits early on.
  5. Don’t stop learning. Just because you’ve graduated from college doesn’t mean your education is over. Make an effort to keep learning, whether that’s through online courses, books, or workshops. Continued education can help you stay relevant in your field and keep your mind sharp.

Connecting with old classmates is a key part of post-grad life, and it’s important to make an effort to stay in touch. Your college friends are likely going through many of the same experiences as you, and they can provide a sense of camaraderie and support.
